Come As You Are. Discover Hope. Grow in Christ.

Whether you're exploring faith, returning to church, or searching for a church family, you are welcome at Tried Stone. Come with your questions, your hopes, and your story.

A Personal Welcome from Our Pastor

A message to our honored guests

Dear Honored Guest,

Grace, mercy, and peace be unto you from God our Father and our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! On behalf of the Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church family, I extend a heartfelt welcome. We are grateful that you have chosen to visit us, whether in person or online.

You may have come seeking answers, encouragement, healing, direction, or a church home. Whatever brought you here, our prayer is that you will hear the Word of God and discover His love for you. Jeremiah 29:13 KJV tells us, “And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”

As you worship with us, open both your ears and your heart to what God is saying through His Word. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:” — John 10:27 KJV. We encourage you to listen prayerfully, examine the Scriptures, and seek the Lord for understanding.

If you are exploring faith, know that you are welcome to ask questions and learn. Jesus declared, “...and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” — John 6:37 KJV. Becoming part of God's kingdom is more than attending a service or joining a church. Jesus taught, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” — John 3:3 KJV. It begins with new life through faith in Him.

If you are searching for a church home, we invite you to worship with us, study God's Word, and prayerfully consider becoming part of this fellowship. Our mission is to make fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. As Romans 10:17 KJV reminds us, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”

May your visit mark the beginning of a deeper relationship with the Lord. We look forward to worshipping, learning, and growing together.

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Terence Standifer

“I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.” — Psalm 122:1 KJV

Our Foundation • Isaiah 28:16 KJV

Exploring Faith?

There is room for your questions.

Honest questions are welcome here. Explore the Bible’s answers to faith, hardship, belonging, Sunday School, and how church leaders serve the congregation.

An open Bible illuminated by gentle light
Who is Jesus Christ, and why does He matter?

The Bible presents Jesus as the Son of God, the Saviour who died for our sins and rose again. His invitation is for those who are seeking Him, not only those who already understand everything. Read John 3:16–17; 1 Corinthians 15:3–4; John 14:6 KJV.

What does it mean to be saved?

Salvation is by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ, not earned by good works. Scripture calls us to believe in Christ and confess Him as Lord. Read Ephesians 2:8–9; Romans 10:9–10; Acts 16:30–31 KJV.

Can I attend if I have doubts or do not know the Bible?

Yes. You are welcome to listen, learn, and ask sincere questions. The Scriptures invite us to examine what we hear and grow in understanding. Read Romans 10:17; Acts 17:11; James 1:5 KJV.

Why does God allow suffering and difficult seasons?

The Bible does not give a simple explanation for every hardship. It does teach that God is near to the brokenhearted, that Jesus understands suffering, and that trials can develop endurance and hope. Read Psalm 34:18; John 16:33; Romans 5:3–5 KJV.

Why should I trust the Bible rather than just follow my feelings?

Feelings are real, but they can change. Christians look to Scripture as the standard for teaching, correction, and spiritual growth, and are encouraged to examine teachings carefully. Read 2 Timothy 3:16–17; Proverbs 3:5–6; Acts 17:11 KJV.

What if I have sinned or have been away from church for years?

The gospel calls us to repentance and offers forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Returning to God begins with honesty, faith, and a willingness to turn toward Him. Read 1 John 1:9; Luke 15:20–24; Romans 5:8 KJV.

Why join a church instead of worshipping only at home?

Personal prayer and Bible study matter, and gathering with believers provides encouragement, accountability, teaching, and opportunities to serve one another. Read Hebrews 10:24–25; Acts 2:42; Ephesians 4:11–13 KJV.

Who should I contact about Sunday School?

For Adult Sunday School questions, including weekly lessons, class participation, flashcards, quizzes, and the SSPB Sunday School Learning Center, contact Deacon Stephen Allen at 313-608-5864 (call or text). Adult Sunday School begins Sundays at 9:30 AM. For Children’s Sunday School, call the church office at 586-463-9430. See 2 Timothy 2:15 and Proverbs 4:7 KJV.

What is the purpose and function of a deacon?

A deacon is a servant-leader who helps meet practical needs, supports the congregation, and promotes unity so the ministry of prayer and the Word is not neglected. Acts 6:1–7 describes the apostles appointing trusted servants to address a practical need; 1 Timothy 3:8–13 describes qualifications for deacons. Read also Philippians 1:1 KJV.

Why contact a deacon before the pastor for routine needs?

For practical matters such as transportation, ministry questions, or help connecting with church resources, contacting a deacon first can help the church respond promptly and allow the pastor to devote appropriate time to prayer, preaching, teaching, and pastoral care. This reflects the principle in Acts 6:2–4 KJV. It is not a rule that prevents anyone from speaking with the pastor; urgent pastoral or spiritual needs should be shared directly when appropriate. Read Acts 6:2–4; 1 Peter 5:2–3 KJV.

How do I reach a deacon or request pastoral care?

Use the Deacon Board contact information in the Leadership section below, or call the church office at 586-463-9430. For a routine question, a deacon can help direct your request. For sensitive or urgent pastoral matters, ask to speak with the pastor. Read Galatians 6:2 and James 5:14 KJV.

How can I begin praying if I do not know what to say?

Speak sincerely to God. You can ask for wisdom, forgiveness, strength, and understanding. Prayer does not require special words. Read Matthew 6:9–13; Philippians 4:6–7; Romans 8:26 KJV.

“...and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.” — John 6:37 KJV

Our Story

Tried Stone: 1980–Present

A brief history of our church.

The Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church was organized by Rev. Nathaniel Calhoun. On Saturday, September 20, 1980 at 7:00 p.m., eighty people met at the home of Mrs. Jeffery Sue Coleman, 76 Michigan Street, Mount Clemens, Michigan. The meeting was called to order by the Reverend Nathaniel Calhoun, Sr. Following devotion, Rev. Calhoun stated the purpose for the meeting was to organize the church.

The name Tried Stone from the scripture reference Isaiah 28:16 was submitted by Reverend Calhoun and accepted by common consent; thus, we became the Tried Stone Missionary Baptist Church.

The first worship service was held at the V.F.W. Hall, 129 South Broadway. From the V.F.W. Hall we moved to Martin Luther King School, 400 Clinton River Drive, and then to the George Washington Jr. High, 196 North Rose Street. After much prayer and hard work we moved to our current location.

The present building and nine adjacent lots were purchased from Joy Community Church. On December 6, 1981, a motorcade of twenty-seven cars proceeded from the V.F.W. Hall to this location of 23512 Henry B Joy Boulevard, where 205 people entered this building. God has blessed us to continue to work on our present edifice.

A list of the pastors which God has allowed to Shepherd Tried Stone are: Pastor Nathaniel Calhoun (1980–1982), Clyde Williams (1983–1985), Winston A. Williams (1987), Edwin D. Brown (1988–1992), Otis N. White (1993–2001), and our current Pastor, Terence Standifer (November 2001–Today).

THANK GOD WE’RE STILL MOVING FORWARD!
